(More customer reviews)I've owned roughly 15 Coffee mugs over the last 10 years (Contigo, Trudeau, other Thermos, etc.), always searching for one that could keep my daily coffee hot for more than 2 hours. This is by far the best mug I have ever owned.
Pros:
The double-wall insulation keeps the coffee hot for HOURS on end. One trick I learned is that if you put boiling water in the mug for 5-10 Minutes prior to putting your coffee in, it will keep even longer, I'm talking upwards of 8 hours.
This is the 1st mug I've owned that is truly is leak - proof. I sometimes put milk and sugar in with my coffee. When I got this mug, I simply add both in and close it and shake it to stir, and have not had a single spill.
The cover to the mug also comes part in 5 pieces that are easy to disassemble and reassemble. I've had numerous mugs that end up with a bad smell because the top gets coffee or milk trapped in it and festers. This mug let's you take apart the cover and clean it thoroughly.
Cons:
To echo another review, the handle is the only weak point of the mug. I had it for 4 weeks and returned the mug twice because of broken handles, and gave up when the 3rd one broke and took it off. Hoping that Thermos redesigns this mug with a better handle in the future...this is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
Overall, great mug and despite the handle, will definitely purchase again in the future, highly recommended.

Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler Review

(More customer reviews)I, like many college kids, cannot survive without caffeine of some sort. This tumbler does a great job of insuring that I have hot coffee until I'm done drinking it. Everybody else has commented on its great insulation abilities, but I'd like to add my own experience. I like to have my coffee slightly hot, but not tongue-burning hot. So I always add a couple of ice cubes. Well, I got my coffee to the perfect temperature at 7:30 this morning and headed off to class. I sipped on it all during class and work, and the temperature stayed perfect. When I finished my coffee at 12:30 this afternoon, it was STILL the perfect temperature. Absolutely fabulous.
As for the other features: The outside of the tumbler stays cool to the touch, and the rubber bottom keeps it from slipping around. However, because of it's design, it could tip over if you knock against it. So don't plan on putting this on your dashboard or floorboard of your car or anything like that. It is the perfect width at the bottom to fit into most cupholders. The rubber around the middle of the tumblers makes for an easy non-slip grip, and the top screws on easily and tightly. My only complaint is that the snap top for the sipper hole does not "snap." It just kind of closes, but it isn't securely closed. So, don't go putting it in a briefcase or backpack, because it is likely to leak onto your stuff. I havent actually tried this, though (and I don't plan to), so I could be wrong. Although it isn't spill proof if you hold it upside down or on its side, it is spill proof while you drink. THe rim of the lid is much higher than the base of the lid, so it prevents coffee from spilling all over you while you're sipping it (unless you're an extraordinarily untalented drinker). When you flip the top open, you do need to hold it open or it might flip down onto your nose - this happened to me and I wound up having to wipe drops of coffee off my nose.
It's super easy to clean - just like any other tumbler.
so, overall, I would completely recommend this to anybody who needs a travel tumbler that does keep coffee the perfect temperature. If you need something leak-proof, however, because you plan on putting it into your brief case or something, I would recommend getting a different Nissan thermos.

Pros:
- Keeps coffee hot for a very long time when sealed.
- Doesn't leak.
- Durable.
- Carabiner makes it easy to clip onto backpack.
Cons:
- A little inconvenient to clean.
- Nissan unresponsive about replacement parts.
Tips:
Make sure the lid is screwed down snugly, but not too tightly. You want to form a complete seal to prevent leaks and retain heat, but the seal gets tighter as the contents cool and shrink.
Don't fill past the raised metal fill-line on the inside of the mug. If you overfill the mug, some liquid will be pushed up into the threads when you screw the lid down, and you won't notice until you tip the mug. (It's easier to see the line if you fill it beneath an overhead light.) If you think your mug leaks, you've probably overfilled it.
If you fill it just right, you don't even have to stir your coffee. Just add your sugar, cream, ketchup, or whatever you put in there, seal the lid, and shake the mug to mix it. (I've never been able to do this with any other mug).
When you wash the mug, remember to remove and wash the silicone rubber o-ring. The lid is hollow and can be pried apart with a spoon for cleaning if some liquid seeps inside.
If you wash the mug in the dishwasher (Nissan recommends against this), remove the plastic base before (or after) washing to remove the water that collects in there.
If you lose the gasket (or cut it on a knife in the dishwasher like I did), I've found these to be suitable inexpensive replacements after a lot of hunting around: 228 Silicone Rubber O-Ring 70A Durometer, Burnt Orange, 2-1/4" ID x 2-1/2" OD x 1/8" W, by Small Parts Inc.

(More customer reviews)I've had my Nissan 14-Ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler for going on six years now. I've dropped it, come close to running over it with our truck, taken it camping with me nearly everywhere I've gone, and filled it with nearly every consumeable liquid imagineable. Through it all, it has only gotten one dent (completely my fault) and the gripping strip in the middle of the cup has started to lose a little of its ability to "stick" or stay in place on the metal.
In terms of its ability to keep hot things hot and cold things cold, I'm utterly impressed. Following the directions for prewarming with hot water, I've had freshly brewed coffee burn my mouth more than 4 hours after being placed in the mug (geographically, Houghton Michigan to Mackinaw City Michigan, USA was my test run area). I suspect if I'd not opened the mug up to drink anything, it would have kept hot for a good deal longer (but I'm a coffee addict, so I haven't been able to wait any longer to test this theory). If you're going to make tea, consider making some using the no-string bags instead of the standard string-attached bags. It's possible to brew your tea with the string still on, but it's a little tough to screw the lid back on with it hanging out and to be honest, it opens you up for a second source of leakage. There's no metallic aftertaste in what you drink, a frequent problem with cheaper mugs, and the taste of your drink doesn't linger in your mug after proper cleaning. If your spouse doesn't like coffee but you do, you can easily share this mug without residual flavors leaking in to whatever you're drinking.
I only have three complaints about this version of the Nissan mug, and two are about the latching mechanism. First, the flip-latch leaks a bit. I like the fact that the flip-latch is easy to open and close with one hand. It's very useful if you're in the middle of negotiating rush hour while driving a manual transmission automobile. However, other mugs offer a sort of pressure-related leak-proof seal. This one does not and the flip-latch results in leakage if the cup tips over while you turn or if it somehow manages to fall on its side. The leakage isn't much, to be honest, but it's enough to require cleanup.
My second latch complaint is personal. If the liquid sloshes inside my mug and there's a small amount on the flip-latch when I open it to take a sip, I invariably end up wearing a small dot of liquid on the end of my nose. It's not a horribly long nose or even oddly shaped, but the latch touches it just enough that I sometimes look rather foolish if anyone is watching me drink.
My third complaint is about the shape of the cup. Aesthetically the design is very pretty and the brushed aluminim easy to clean, doesn't show fingerprints, and is darn near scratch proof if you don't drag it along rough pavement. However, the bottom of the mug doesn't fit into any cup holder in my car. It fits well enough in my truck cup holder. But in my car, it's just big enough that the stable, non-slip base padding makes it just a bit too large to fit. I end up wedging the cup between my legs while driving or setting it on the dashboard and praying I don't have to make any sudden movements or sharp turns. A slightly narrower bottom would fix this problem quite handily.
Wishfully thinking, I would have liked to see this mug have a handle. The middle grip strip is very nice and the whole mug feels comfy in your hand, but I like the choice of a handle. And as luck would have it, Nissan has another model with just such a feature. If you like a handle on your mug, consider getting that model instead. I'll be sticking with mine for a little while longer, though.

I have tested (and yes, bought-just ask my wife) well over a dozen various insulated containers for use in the car. No I'm not one of those people who walk around constantly drinking (or hydrating). I use it almost exclusively in my car. It's simple, I want the liquid to stay hot, I want to be able to operate it with one hand, and I don't want it to spill or leak. This is the only product that does that and it does it well. I have given it as a gift to at least a half dozen people and since they are relatives there's no more critical an audience. They agree. Enough said.
